Hijama - The Forgotten Medicine
What is Hijama?
Hijama (wet cupping) is an ancient practice in which a small suction cup is placed on the skin and a vacuum is created, drawing the blood close to the surface. The cup is removed and with a small razor blade, tiny incisions are made (the process is virtually painless). The cup is replaced, the suction is applied, and the blood begins to ooze out — dark, clotted and “filled with toxins,” according to Dr. Magda Amir, an expert in the practice and study of hijama, or wet cupping therapy.
Hijama and Islam
Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:
“Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)…” [Bukhari]
“Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” [Abu Dawud]
“I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me, Upon you is cupping (hijama), O Muhammad.” [Ibn Maajah]
In another narration, the angels said,
“Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with cupping (hijama).” [Tirmidhi]
